SS 316 for industrial gaskets

Molybdenum-bearing stainless steel with enhanced resistance to chlorides and aggressive media.

SS316 (SS 316) adds molybdenum to the standard 18/8 stainless alloy, giving it noticeably better resistance to chlorides, acids, and marine or chemically aggressive environments than SS 304. It is the preferred metal winding for spiral wound gaskets and RTJ rings wherever the process medium is corrosive rather than general-purpose.

Frequently asked questions

Is SS 316 always better than SS 304 for gaskets?
Not always. SS 316 offers better resistance to chlorides and many chemicals, but SS 304 may be sufficient and more economical for milder service. Correct selection depends on media and temperature.
Why is SS316 used for spiral wound gaskets in chemical plants?
An SS316 spiral wound gasket resists the chlorides and acidic byproducts common in chemical and petrochemical process streams far better than SS304, reducing the risk of pitting corrosion over the gasket's service life.
