Carbon steel is the workhorse metal of gasket manufacturing — strong, machinable, and inexpensive for non-corrosive service. It is the standard choice for RTJ rings (in soft iron and low-carbon grades) and general metallic gaskets where the process medium does not demand stainless or alloy performance.

Can carbon steel gaskets be used in corrosive service?
Carbon steel is generally not preferred for corrosive media. Stainless or specialty alloys are recommended. Soft iron / low carbon grades are commonly used for RTJ rings where flange hardness protection is required.
What temperature range can carbon steel gaskets handle?
Carbon steel gaskets are generally rated for service up to around 540°C in non-corrosive applications. Above this, or in corrosive media, stainless steel or a specialty alloy is recommended instead.
