SS 304 for industrial gaskets

Austenitic stainless steel offering good corrosion resistance for general industrial sealing.

SS304 (SS 304) is the most widely specified stainless steel in industrial gasket manufacturing. It resists rust and corrosion in most general process environments, machines cleanly, and holds tight tolerances — which is why it is the default metal winding for spiral wound gaskets and the default core for Kammprofile gaskets across everyday plant service.

Key properties

  • Good general corrosion resistance
  • Widely available and cost-effective
  • Suitable for many industrial media
  • Common winding and jacket material

Typical gasket uses

  • Spiral wound metal windings
  • Kammprofile cores
  • Jacketed gasket jackets
  • General industrial metallic gaskets

Frequently asked questions

When should I choose SS 304 over SS 316?
SS 304 is suitable for many general industrial applications. SS 316 is preferred where chlorides or more aggressive media are present. Share your process medium and we will confirm the correct grade.
What temperature can an SS304 spiral wound gasket withstand?
An SS304 spiral wound gasket typically handles service from around -200°C up to 550°C, though the practical limit also depends on the filler material (Graphite, PTFE, or CAF) wound between the metal strips.
